It is not often that this MadMan is taken aback .. especially by something I already suspected/knew…  but sometimes seeing the proof or having it validated can still render shock, disgust and in this case grief.

I always wondered about the high rates of cancer and diabetes in my neighborhood, and in other Black neighborhoods.  These diseases are not inherent in people of African descent.

What makes it worse is that every elder in my family has died at the mercy of one of these diseases.  My mother passed from cancer at the young age of 59… as did every other elder on my floor in the co-op building we owned in Harlem.  I long believed environmental factors played a huge part in the mortality rate of my beloved Harlem residents… so to come across this  … as you can imagine, floored me and left me speechless.

There is a part of me that says “this can’t be true”, but the larger part of me, having grown up in the area, having seen the bad food sold to us ..(even the more affluent of us in Harlem) .. I have no choice but to acknowledge what I have known for years has been validated.

and no one cares…

The only thing I can do as an individual is share the knowledge and information.  If we get MAD enough collectively, raise our voices.. eventually we will be heard.  I hope.

okay like… i clicked on the link and it’s a two-minute video of a woman giving a speech discussing a new york times graphic which points to higher rates of diabetes in poor communities and communities of colour in new york - a well-documented consistent trend throughout urban spaces in north america which many sociologists and health researchers attribute to the inaccessibility of nutritious food. after briefly explaining the graphic, the woman states that “after chernobyl, ‘they’ [who is they? it’s not explained] started shipping milk from dairies close to nuclear reactors to these neighbourhoods.” and that, supposedly, is the REAL reason for the higher rate of diabetes. there’s no source for the video, nothing outlining the woman’s credentials, nothing.

so like. okay. no, there is not a global conspiracy to sell radioactive milk to black people and poor people. nuclear power plants do not emit enough radiation to present even remote health risks. according to the united states nuclear regulatory commission:

An operating nuclear power plant produces very small amounts of radioactive gases and liquids, as well as small amounts of direct radiation. If you lived within 50 miles of a nuclear power plant, you would receive an average radiation dose of about 0.01 millirem per year. To put this in perspective, the average person in the United States receives an exposure of 300 millirem per year from natural background sources of radiation.

Nuclear power plants sometimes release radioactive gases and liquids into the environment under controlled, monitored conditions to ensure that they pose no danger to the public or the environment. These releases dissipate into the atmosphere or a large water source and, therefore, are diluted to the point where it becomes difficult to measure any radioactivity. By contrast, most of an operating nuclear power plant’s direct radiation is blocked by the plant’s steel and concrete structures. The remainder dissipates in an area of controlled, uninhabited space around the plant, ensuring that it does not affect any member of the public.

and while there is a proven link between exposure to nuclear radiation and the development of diabetes, this has literally only been observed in survivors of the hiroshima bombing and people who cleaned up after chernobyl. there is absolutely no evidence whatsoever that low doses of radiation cause diabetes - and considering that nuclear power plants only emit 0.01 millirem of radiation per year, the claim that anyone could contract diabetes by drinking milk from a dairy in the proximity of a power plant is complete and utter bullshit.

fearmongering nonsense like this distracts from the real health problems and economic inequality which contribute to low quality of life in poor communities and communities of colour and it’s honestly fucking shameful that somebody would invent a conspiracy theory like this to divert attention from those real issues.

Wait you mean you can hold 2 opinions at one time? Things are complex? What next, 3 concepts at once? No, now you’re just being greedy.

Yes,keep defending the terrorists and criminalizing the white men,Tumblr.

if you think All Arabian-Looking People are Terrorists, then yes, they are being defended. no white men are criminalized in this. what is criminalized is this environment of hate generated by lowball ‘satire,’ which, when replicated w/ other minorities, shows it’s bad taste rather obviously. it also asks that you recognize supporting of charlie as a generalization for the victims and, as a result, a publication, is support of pointlessly islamophobic and inflammatory comix. it asks instead that you understand the issue from multiple viewpoints, and for you to not fall back on xenophobia - which is increasingly important as hate groups gain power in europe.

the comic is very clear in this so i’m assuming you’re posting like it’s /pol/ to which i reply: lmao

“We have deluded ourselves into believing the myth that capitalism grew and prospered out of the Protestant ethic of hard work and sacrifices. Capitalism was built on the exploitation of black slaves and continues to thrive on the exploitation of the poor, both black and white, both here and abroad.”
